ABOUT QUEENSWOOD SCHOOL

Head Teacher's Welcome
Welcome to the Queenswood School website: I hope these pages give you a flavour of what a vibrant school this is.

As Head Teacher I have a passionate enthusiasm to drive forward my vision for the school: that Queenswood School provides not only an outstanding education for the children in our care but that we also help equip them to take up a useful place in society as confident, caring, thoughtful, thinking people - these children are society's future. I joined the school in 1987, eventually becoming Headteacher and proprietor of this wonderful family school of which I am extremely proud and honoured to lead.

As an independent school, we deliberately choose to keep our class sizes small so that our pupils receive the individual attention to suit their needs, together with exemplary pastoral care: where every child is known and valued. We nurture high aspirations for our children so that they may reach their full potential, not only academically, but also as successful and fulfilled people who contribute to society. Our curriculum is exciting and relevant - engaging each child on their own individual journey to become effective and confident learners, prepared for adult life in the 21st century. Our team of highly committed and well-qualified staff work closely in partnership with parents to ensure an open, honest and collaborative approach based on trust and commitment to provide the best we possibly can for each and every child in our care.

Following our inspection in October, Ofsted have now published their report and I am delighted that once again, we have been rated as ‘Good school with Outstanding features’. At our last inspection we were graded as Good with Outstanding in one area and now we are celebrating having two Outstanding criteria this time!

Comments from our 2019 report praised the school’s vision: ‘the headteacher sets high expectations for everyone and leads by example. As a result, pupils are treated warmly, respectfully by all staff members and in return, pupils respond by being polite, courteous and very well-mannered’.

This continued drive and shared vision has enabled us to be in the position where we can celebrate our success and enjoy recognition from Ofsted, here are some of the highlights of the October 2023 report:

  • Pupils happily attend this friendly and inclusive school. They are looked after by their friends and by caring adults who know them well;

  • A positive and respectful culture threads through everything that the school does;

  • Pupils’ behaviour is exceptionally positive…(they) support each other to maintain the high standards that the school has set for their behaviour and conduct;

  • Teachers help pupils to achieve highly. They ensure that each pupil receives work that is well matched to their age and their knowledge of the curriculum;

  • The school has a focus on building pupils’ confidence and their character from the moment they start school;

  • This is a calm, happy and respectful school where bullying is not tolerated

Without doubt, we can reflect on another superb report with much to celebrate and I would like to thank everyone – staff, children and parents for their hard work and support. Well done to each and every member of our Queenswood family – thank you and it’s onwards and upwards from here!

Our Philosophy

Our aim is to nurture our children by means of a balanced education within a quiet, caring and secure environment so that they are able to reach their full potential both academically and as people. Every child is an individual and developing the "whole person" is at the very centre of our values.

Our History

The school was founded in 1937 as Wakefield Tutorial School with a site in Crofton, Wakefield. The school expanded to include sites in Pontefract and also opened a preparatory school in Morley in 1958. Sadly the other schools closed, but in April 2009, we moved to our present site and renamed ourselves Queenswood School. We now enjoy life in our 'new' home, sited a conservation area in Morley town centre. We have a lovely garden area, a single storey building, plenty of outdoor play area and enjoy use of the local church hall for additional space for performances and sporting activities.
